The 2010 Laureate Award Honorees
TheLaureate Award is a distinguished honor for select Fellows of the American College of Physicians in the New York Chapter who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to excellence in medical care, education or research, and service to the community and the American College of Physicians. This award is the most prestigious honor bestowed to a chapter member at the state level. The 2010 Laureate Award Honorees are:

Rochester Physician Helps Pakistan Flood Victims
Dr. Bilal Ahmed and several other doctors have purchased 40 chlorine generator kits that Pakistan International Airlines has offered to ship for free. The 2010 Pakistan floods began in July 2010 following heavy monsoon rains. Present estimates indicate that over two thousand people have died and over a million homes have been destroyed since the flooding began. According to the Pakistani government, 20 million people have been left homeless or are otherwise affected.

Alwin Steinmann, MD, FACP, Recipient of the Top-10 Key Contact Award for 2009
The NYACP would like to congratulate Dr. Steinmann for receiving the ACP Key Contact Award for 2009. Among Dr. Steinmann's more notable contributions was the development of the resident teaching module on advocacy. This has led to more than 10 students and residents being rotated through the program. Dr. Steinmann has also been chair of the Health and Public Policy Committee and has met with State delegation for the past five years.
The Key Contact Award was implemented in 1995 to recognize those individuals who have made exceptional efforts in support of ACP's advocacy program. Recipients are determined on the basis of the quality and quantity of responses to ACP's Legislative Alerts and other federal grassroots advocacy initiaitves.

Robert M. Glickman, MD, MACP, Recent Mastership and Anthony J. Greico, MD, FACP Receives The Desforges Awardee in Oustanding Teaching
The NYACP would like to congratulate Dr. Glickman for his recent ascension to an ACP Master. Dr. Glickman is a Professor of Medicine and Gastroenterology at New York University School of Medicine.
The NYACP would also like to congratulate Dr. Greico on receiving the Jane F. Desforges Distinguished Teacher Award. The award is bestowed upon a fellow or master of the college who has demonstrated the ennobling qualities of a great teacher as judged by the acclaim and accomplishments of former students who have been inspired and have acieved positions of leadership in the field of medical education, primarily as teachers. Dr. Greico will also be awarded mastership when elected.
Daniel Sulmasy, FACP, has been appointed to President Obama’s Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues
Dr. Sulmasy holds the Kilbride-Clinton Chair in Medicine and Ethics in the Department of Medicine and Divinity School at the University of Chicago and is associate director of the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics. He is a former member of the ACP Ethics, Professionalism and Human Rights Committee.
The Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues will advise the president on bioethical issues that may emerge from advances in biomedicine and related areas of science and technology. It will work with the goal of identifying and promoting policies and practices to ensure that scientific research, health care delivery, and technological innovation are conducted in an ethically responsible manner. First solo practice in NYS to achieve NCQA Level III certifcation and the IPRO Quality Award
Dr. Salvatore Volpe’s practice has been named the first solo practice in the state of NY to achieve Level 3 NCQA Patient Centered Medical Home Certification; the highest level of recognition achievable. The recognition status was awarded after rigorous evaluation by NCQA on many aspects of the medical office practices and performance.
In addition, Salvatore Volpe MD, received the 2007 IPRO Quality Award. The award was presented in recognition of his commitment to improving care for Medicare beneficiaries, as reflected in the work he has done to create a patient-focused environment within his practice, and his work as a physician champion in promoting the use of electronic health records and health information technology for quality improvement.
Dr. Salvatore Volpe currently serves as the President for the Health Information Management and Systems Society New York Chapter. HIMSS is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting a better understanding of health care information and management systems. His term will be active until 2011.
