Consider Your Workflow When Complying with Controlled Substance Prescribing Regulations - ISTOP Act

In two months, on August 27, 2013, most prescribers will be required to consult the Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) registry when writing prescriptions for Schedule II, III, and IV controlled substances.

NYACP encourages members to not only register for a Health Commerce System Account (HCS)now but to familiarize yourself with the PMP registry. A HCS account is a necessary first step to access the PMP.

Proposed regulations were released last week stating that prescribers are allowed to access a patient’s history from the PMP registry no more than 24 hours prior to the prescribing of controlled substances. Confirmation of the consultation or the reason for failing to consult should be noted in the patient’s medical chart by the practitioner.

Physicians will be able to appoint designees to check the registry on their behalf. The proposed regulations also define who qualifies to be listed as a designee.

More information on the designee provisions will be featured in upcoming special alerts.

You can access a copy of the proposed regulations and additional information on our ISTOP Resource page at http://www.nyacp.org/istop
