February 5, 2026
John Hall, MD, FACP, Chapter Co-President
Todd Simon, MD, FACP, Chapter Co-President
Dear NYACP Members,
Welcome to our February newsletter. We are writing this in late January, and it is very cold, with snowstorms in the Northeast. Do your best to stay safe and warm. We’re hoping that you all had a good start to 2026,and we also encourage those of you who made New Year’s resolutions to stick with them. A quick Google AI search said that about 25% of people may quit their resolutions within 1 week, and up to 66% after the first month. So, if you’re a resolution maker – keep on going! If you have had a hiccup in the plan, it’s okay to start over. Some tips to make new behaviors last: keep your goals specific, focused, and achievable; develop good, small, actionable habits that you can stick to; solicit support from family, friends, groups, or even use an app to help.
If our calculations are correct, you will receive this newsletter on February 5th, and the Super Bowl will only be days away. Unfortunately, we already know that the Buffalo Bills will not be participating in the big game again this year (sorry, John!). Maybe next year will be better, when both the Bills and the Giants have new head coaches. Also, the Opening Ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina, Italy are at hand. The opening is scheduled for February 6th. We will be watching the newest addition to the winter Olympics lineup – Ski Mountaineering, otherwise known as “Skimo” (cool name!). In this sport, athletes climb up the mountain on skis and then ski down – testing both endurance and technical skill. There are 3 categories: men’s and women’s sprint, and a mixed gender relay. We’ll be looking for the team of Anna Gibson and Cameron Smith to bring home a medal for the U.S. in this new event!
Looking forward to Spring and IMM 2026! We hope to see many of you at the National ACP Internal Medicine Meeting 2026 in San Francisco, California on April 16, 17 and 18. If you haven’t made your plans yet – now’s the time! We would especially love to see some folks who have never been to IMM before. Once you experience IMM, we suspect that you’ll be “hooked” and will want to return every year. It’s a fantastic educational event! The meeting is also a wonderful opportunity to network, renew personal connections, and yes – even have some fun when you are out and about in San Francisco. Please plan on joining us at the New York Chapter reception where we can say hello in person and extend our thanks for being part of NYACP. (The reception will take place immediately following ACP’s Convocation Ceremony – April 16th)
New feature for ACP MKSAP! We wanted to make you aware of a cool new feature of ACP MKSAP that is launching on February 25th. As a result of a new collaboration between ACP and ABIM, subscribers of ACP MKSAP will have the ability to import their most recent ABIM assessment results directly to their ACP MKSAP account. This will work not only for the initial certification exam and the 10-year Maintenance of Certification exam, but also for the Longitudinal Knowledge Assessment (LKA). This new feature will allow users to build a customized ACP MKSAP Learning Plan based on missed exam questions and topic areas where you may benefit from more study or additional knowledge. Best of all, this feature is FREE to all ACP MKSAP subscribers!
Meet your other NYACP Governors! This month’s spotlight is on Cori Salvit, who is the Governor-Elect Designee for the Manhattan/Bronx Region.
Dr. Cori Salvit is a hospitalist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) and serves as the Director of the MSK Transitional Year (TY) Residency Program. In this role, she leads a highly competitive one-year internship that provides graduate medical education across multiple clinical disciplines. As program director, Dr. Salvit oversees all aspects of training, and is deeply committed to supporting residents and junior faculty throughout their professional growth. Beyond MSK, Dr. Salvit is an active member within the American College of Physicians (ACP). She is a national ACP Wellbeing Champion and has served in numerous leadership roles, including NYACP Manhattan District Councilor and President, as well as Vice Chair and Chair of the New York ACP Wellbeing Committee. She helped establish and continues to co-lead the NYACP virtual series “Small Feedings of the Soul: Readings and Reflections,” which focuses on reflection, connection, and physician wellbeing. Dr. Salvit is also an active member of the Alliance of Academic Internal Medicine.
Outside of work, Dr. Salvit is a proud mother to her two daughters, Bella and Lia. She enjoys spending time with her family, friends, and dog, Phineas. With a lifelong passion for dance, Dr. Salvit regularly takes classes at Steps on Broadway, which brings her joy and balance!
Looking for the next NYACP Governor! Nominations for Governor-Elect for the Hudson Valley Region are now open. The successful candidate will spend a year as Governor-Elect starting in April 2027. They will officially take over for Dr. Donna Morrison when she completes her 4-year term in April 2028. In addition to a term on the ACP Board of Governors, the successful candidate will simultaneously serve on the NYACP Executive Committee. We are looking for a dynamic leader who exhibits integrity, shows commitment to the College, and demonstrates dedication to the Chapter and the medical community. This is an opportunity to work with our Chapter members locally and with leaders in Internal Medicine at the national level. The Governor typically spends several hours per week on College business with the support of our terrific administrative staff. Serving as an ACP Governor can be an extremely rewarding and even a life-changing experience.
Physicians As Agents of Change Through Service! Dr Martin Luther King Jr. Day just passed, and our thoughts turn to service for others. As you may know, MLK Jr. Day was made a National Day of Service by President Bill Clinton in 1994, who signed a bill sponsored by Representative John Lewis and Senator Harris Wofford. On this day and every day, we are thankful to all of you who dedicate your careers, and indeed your lives, to service with and for others.
New York Chapter Advocacy! Our Chapter continues to work diligently in relation to legislative issues on both the State and National Level. We are waiting for the Governor’s decision on an important bill, the MAiD Bill. The Legislature is also considering a NY single payer healthcare bill. If you are so inclined, please consider contacting Governor Hochul’s Office to register your opinions. On a National level, as you are aware, there are ongoing and difficult situations related to Immigration Enforcement. This can become particularly problematic for us as Physicians and for other members of our health care teams, particularly when such actions impact health care settings and patients. A fairly recent article published in the Annals of Internal Medicine can help provide some strategies and resources. The ACP website has some additional resources as well.
Dad jokes of the month!
Man: My wife is pregnant and her contractions are only two minutes apart!
Doctor: Is this her first child?
Man: No! This is her husband!
A man walks into the Doctor’s office with a cucumber up his nose, a carrot in his left ear, and a banana in his right ear.
Man: Doctor, what is the matter with me?
Doctor: You are not eating properly!
And here’s one for your kids:
Why didn’t Elsa go to the doctor for her sore throat and cough?
Because a cold never bothered her anyway! (sing this one when you tell it!)
We gratefully thank you for your involvement with NYACP and for the care you provide for patients and colleagues.
All our warmest wishes,
Todd and John
