Medical Aid in Dying Act Survey-Due April 30th

Sponsored by Stony Brook University

As you may know, the Medical Aid in Dying Act has been passed by the New York State Legislature and was recently signed into law by the Governor in early February 2026. Stony Brook University is conducting a survey-based research study to better understand physicians’ attitudes (from all specialties) toward Medical Aid in Dying. Your participation will provide valuable insights into the perspectives of medical professionals and help inform how best to support clinicians as this legislation moves forward.

Participation in this survey is entirely voluntary, and all responses are anonymous. No identifying information will be collected.

The survey should take approximately 3–5 minutes to complete.

Background on the MAID Act and the legislation in New York:

The 2025 Medical Aid in Dying (MAID) Act has been signed into law in New York State. This legislation will permit terminally ill adults—those diagnosed with irreversible and incurable conditions and given a prognosis of six months or less—to obtain a prescription for medication that they may self-administer to end their lives. Eligibility requires confirmation by two independent physicians that the patient is mentally capable of making an informed decision and able to self-administer the medication. The MAID Act was first introduced in 2016 and, after nearly a decade of advocacy, passed the New York State Legislature and was signed into law by Governor Hochul on February 6, 2026. The MAID law will go into effect six months after the Governor’s signing. Physicians are now faced with the need to examine their beliefs, values, and professional responsibilities regarding this practice. Although medical aid in dying is legal in several other states and countries, there is limited data on physician attitudes toward MAID in New York.

The survey will be open until April 30, 2026.
