Dear NYACP Members,
As we write this, it’s May - the flowers are blooming, the Mets are (magically) still in 1st place, and the Knicks are through to the 2nd round of the playoffs (against the hated Celtics)! You may notice that we have both moved on from hockey, as neither the Sabres nor the Rangers made it into the playoffs. However, there is a need to throw in a “Go Bills”, because John got emails wondering why the Bills were not mentioned in the last Presidents’ message. This is also an exciting time of year for graduates – Medical School graduations are underway, and we are sure our PGY3 Medicine Residents, and final-year Fellows are already looking forward to July 1st! While that “senioritis” is kicking in, we’ve also got a lot going on here at New York ACP. So, here we go:
What cool thing happened last month? At the end of April, a strong group of NYACP members were in Washington, DC for the annual ACP Leadership Day. John represented the New York Governors and Amanda Allen represented our Chapter staff. There were several other Attendings, Residents, Medical Students, and a Registered Nurse, who all expertly advocated on our behalf in the halls of Congress. We met with staff from both New York Senators and multiple Representatives from all over New York State. There were 3 important issues that were discussed in detail: Medicare Physician payment reform, opposition to Medicaid funding cuts, and efforts to protect our Public Health infrastructure and biomedical research. Hopefully, we can continue to make progress as we work together to achieve these goals. Please let us know if you want to be more involved in national or state advocacy efforts.
Resident and Fellow Resources
ACP and NYACP offer a wealth of resources and opportunities for Resident and Fellow members. The staff has curated a list of top picks in Education, Professional Development, Community, and Advocacy.
For residents or fellows in training, this is a must-read.
For program directors or those working closely with residents or fellows, it's a must-share!
What's Trending in NYACP
Last month, the NYACP Medical Student Committee proudly hosted the third installment of its ongoing Medical Student Mentorship Series, titled “Residency Ready – Tips and Insights.” This dynamic session offered invaluable guidance on one of the most pivotal transitions in a medical career—matching into residency.
Topics included crafting compelling personal statements, securing strong letters of recommendation, navigating away rotations, building a thoughtful rank list, and more. Attendees benefited from the expertise of a distinguished panel of physician leaders, including: Rachel Hathaway, MD; Nicholas Berbari, MD, FACP; Andy Dunn, MD, MACP; Michael Rosenblum, MD, MACP; Karen Friedman, MD, FACP, MS; and Daniel Pomerantz, MD, MPH, MACP.
We are also grateful to our outstanding medical student moderators—Amanda Greco, Chloe Tse Wong, Chloe Krugel, and Erin Russell—who guided the conversation with thoughtful questions and peer insight.
Feedback from the session was overwhelmingly positive, and according to post-event polling, interest is strong for a Part 4—so stay tuned!
If you're a physician or resident interested in mentoring the next generation, or a student looking to get involved, we welcome your participation. The Mentorship Series is a growing community effort—join us in shaping its future! Email Izaiah Wright at iwright@nyacp.org.
On May 1, 2025, it was announced that Sections A–I, and the instructions on the MOLST form have been updated. These revisions are being incorporated into the electronic version. The Department of Health strongly recommends that all staff involved with MOLST review the updated instructions and legal requirements checklists available on the Department’s website.
Honoring patient preferences is a critical element in providing quality end-of-life care. To help physicians and other health care providers discuss and convey a patient's wishes regarding cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and other life-sustaining treatment, the DOH as approved form (DOH-5003), Medical Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment (MOLST), which can be used statewide. MOLST is intended for patients with serious health conditions who:
April and May were active advocacy months for NYACP! Groups of NYACP member physicians, residents, and students traveled to Washington, DC and Albany, NY, to speak with lawmakers on key issues affecting physicians and patients. The NY Chapter devoted an entire week, from May 12–16, to advocacy programs, presentations, and activities. During this time, members were offered an opportunity to gain firsthand experience and engaging in statewide advocacy initiatives.
Advocacy activities included:
