NYACP Presidents Message

June 5, 2025
John Hall, MD, FACP, Chapter Co-President

Todd Simon, MD, FACP, Chapter Co-President

Dear NYACP members,

As we write this, it’s May - the flowers are blooming, the Mets are (magically) still in 1st place, and the Knicks are through to the 2nd round of the playoffs (against the hated Celtics)! You may notice that we have both moved on from hockey, as neither the Sabres nor the Rangers made it into the playoffs. However, there is a need to throw in a “Go Bills”, because John got emails wondering why the Bills were not mentioned in the last Presidents’ message. This is also an exciting time of year for graduates – Medical School graduations are underway, and we are sure our PGY3 Medicine Residents, and final-year Fellows are already looking forward to July 1st! While that “senioritis” is kicking in, we’ve also got a lot going on here at New York ACP. So, here we go:

What cool thing happened last month? At the end of April, a strong group of NYACP members were in Washington, DC for the annual ACP Leadership Day. John represented the New York Governors and Amanda Allen represented our Chapter staff. There were several other Attendings, Residents, Medical Students, and a Registered Nurse, who all expertly advocated on our behalf in the halls of Congress. We met with staff from both New York Senators and multiple Representatives from all over New York State. There were 3 important issues that were discussed in detail: Medicare Physician payment reform, opposition to Medicaid funding cuts, and efforts to protect our Public Health infrastructure and biomedical research. Hopefully, we can continue to make progress as we work together to achieve these goals. Please let us know if you want to be more involved in national or state advocacy efforts.

What groovy stuff is coming up? Although it may seem far off, please “SAVE THE DATE” on Saturday, October 11th for the NYACP Annual Scientific Meeting at the Crown Plaza Albany – The Desmond Hotel. We have a fantastic agenda planned, including the Keynote Plenary by Dr. William Fox (immediate past-Chair of the ACP Board of Regents) entitled “Why Doctors Get Paid What They Get Paid”. We are looking forward to any light that Dr. Fox can shed on this confusing topic. We also have timely sessions on peri-operative medicine, elder care, addiction medicine and “Immunotherapy – What the Primary Care Doctor Needs to Know”. For our Residents and Medical Students, there will be the always eye-opening poster session, and the fast-moving and exciting Doctors’ Dilemma competition. We heard that the lunch will be pretty good too – and it’s included! Please join us.

Meet your NYACP Staff! We introduced ourselves last month. We also want you to get to know the amazing hard-working staff here at NYACP. This month’s highlight is on Amanda Allen. Amanda is the Director of Communications and Office Management at NYACP. After earning a degree in Human Biology from the University at Albany (SUNY), she spent 15 years in technical roles, including training in medical billing and electronic health record systems.  Amanda now enjoys helping NYACP members grow in their careers and bring their ideas to life. She is also our social media maven – so if you see Amanda with her phone at the ready – smile! Outside of work, you’ll find her pursuing her own passions - skiing and traveling.

Dad joke of the month! (Brought to you by none-other than Dad John Hall): “I told my patient today that he had acute appendicitis. He said it’s better than an ugly one.”

That’s it for now. Please remember that we are always available to you for any questions, comments, concerns, or suggestions. We’ll “see” you again next month!
