Clinical Triad Panel: Dementia and Overall Evaluation of the Older Patient

Dr. Kevin Costello is an internal medicine physician and geriatrician based at Albany Medical Center’s Internal Medicine Group. Also director of Albany Medical College’s Geriatric Medicine Fellowship, he specializes in the daily management and continuity of care for elderly patients, with particular focus on their functional status and cognitive ability. He also provides home care for homebound elderly people throughout the eleven counties of the greater Capital Region.

He is a board certified internist and geriatrician. He received a bachelor's degree from Siena College and his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons. He completed a residency in internal medicine at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, Quebec and a fellowship in geriatric medicine with McGill University and the University of Montreal. He subsequently completed a research fellowship in the Department of Pharmacology at Albany Medical College.

At the Alden March Bioethics Institute at Albany Medical College, Dr. Costello precepts students and has worked on projects focused on advanced care planning in Alzheimer’s disease.Dr. Costello is a recipient of the NYACP Excellence Award in Clinical Excellence in 2024.

Healthcare Update from ACP

Shari Erickson has worked for ACP since 2007, starting in ACP’s Center for Practice Improvement and Innovation.  She was promoted to Vice President of Governmental Affairs and Medical Practice in 2012, taking charge of ACP’s advocacy and policy initiatives related to federal regulatory agencies. Most recently she has been serving as ACP’s Interim Senior Vice President of Governmental Affairs and Public Policy. Erickson takes over her new role as head of ACP’s Washington office from Bob Doherty, who is now ACP’s Special Advisor to the Chief Advocacy Officer and Senior Vice President Emeritus and will be  retiring on July 31, 2022.

Before coming to ACP, Erickson was a Senior Program Director with the National Quality Forum (NQF) in Washington, D.C. where she was responsible for managing an array of projects that support NQF’s national strategy for healthcare quality measurement and reporting. Erickson earned a Master of Public Health from The Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health in 2009.

Why Doctors Get Paid What They Get Paid

William E. Fox, MD, MACP is the Chair Emeritus of the American College of Physicians, representing internal medicine physicians, related subspecialists, and medical students.

A resident of Charlottesville, VA, Dr. Fox is a partner in Fox & Brantley Internal Medicine in Charlottesville, a still independent medical practice. Before entering private practice, he spent five years with the National Health Service Corps at Central Virginia Community Health Center in Buckingham, VA, while simultaneously working as Clinical Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at University of Virginia.

Dr. Fox earned his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Medicine, where he received the Anna Marie Chirico Prize for distinguished work in primary care. He completed his postgraduate training in internal medicine at the University of Virginia. He has attained Mastership in ACP, the College’s highest honorary designation that recognizes significant impact in practice, leadership, or in medical research.
William E. Fox, MD, MACP, served on ACP’s Board of Regents for the last six years. The Board of Regents manages the business and affairs of ACP and is the main policy-making body of the College.  He is a past Chair of ACP's Medical Practice and Quality Committee.

Previously, Dr. Fox served as Chair of ACP’s Board of Governors and prior to that, he served as Governor of ACP’s Virginia Chapter. Dr. Fox has received numerous honors and recognitions including the American College of Physicians Virginia Young Internist of the Year award in 2010, the Paul Florentino Volunteerism Award in 2013 and the Richard Neubauer Advocate for Internal Medicine Award in 2014.

Clinical Triad Panel: Advanced Care Planning and Goals for Care Discussion

Nicole Gise, MD is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, and Hospice and Palliative Medicine. After completing her undergraduate training at Binghamton University she attended SUNY Upstate Medical University for her medical degree. She completed Internal Medicine residency at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, followed by fellowship training at the University of Rochester. She joined our team at Highland Hospital in 2018 and provides both inpatient and outpatient Palliative Care services, and also works as part of our Geriatrics division. She serves as the director for our outpatient Palliative Care clinic.

Dr. Gise's professional interests include providing high quality palliative and geriatric care to our most frail older adults in the community, along with expanding access via home visits and telemedicine. Her passions outside of work include reading, travel, and enjoying local craft beer and wine. She resides in Rochester with her husband, young daughter, along with several family pets.

Dr. Jennifer Hensley, MD is a Geriatric Medicine Physician in East Setauket, NY. Dr. Hensley specializes in Geriatric Medicine, has 27 years of experience, and is board certified in Geriatric Medicine. Dr. Hensley graduated from New York Medical College and is affiliated with Stony Brook University Hospital and Mather Hospital. 

Dr. Hensley received the NY Chapter Excellence Award in Clinical Excellence in 2022 and is Vice Chair of the Chapter's Geriatrics and Palliative Care Task Force.

Daniel King MD, FACP is a board certified Internist and Geriatrician with the University of Rochester, associated with Highland Hospital. When asked to describe “Geriatrics” to his patients he will often tell them that he views himself as a specialist in the types of transitions that occur as we age and how we can best approach them. He was originally attracted to Geriatrics during his residency training because he enjoyed the stories that his patients had to tell. He is an active educator within the university and is also the medical director of the Highland Internal Medicine Residency practice, where he enjoys his role as a mentor to the next generation of physicians. Outside of his role as a physician, Dr. King strives to spend as much time outdoors in the woods while balancing responsibilities as a father of two young daughters.

Dr. King is Chair of NYACP's Geriatrics and Palliative Care Task Force.

Immunotherapy: What the Primary Doctor Needs to Know

Dr. Barbara T. Ma, is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine and an Assistant Attending Physician at New York Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Ma graduated with B.S. in Biomedical Engineering and M.S. in Biotechnology from Johns Hopkins University. She received her medical degree from New York Medical College. She completed her internal medicine training at Georgetown University Hospital and fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medicine, where she also served as a chief fellow.

Dr. Ma cares for patients with skin cancers, including melanoma. Her research focus is optimizing immunotherapy treatments for solid tumor patients with special interest on immunotherapy toxicities. She heads the Phase I unit and leads Cellular Therapy for Solid Tumors at Cornell. Dr. Ma is a recipient of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Conquer Cancer Foundation Young Investigator Award. She is a member of American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), Golden Humanism Honor Society (GHHS), and Society for Immunotherapy and Translational Research in Cancer.

You Just Need to Stop-Stigma, Neurbiology and Treatment for Addiction

Dr. Lipi Roy is an internal medicine and addiction medicine physician, speaker, writer and sought-after media personality. As an MSNBC and NBC News Medical Contributor, Dr. Roy made nearly 250 nationwide appearances discussing multiple COVID-related health issues. Dr. Roy’s leadership experience spans academia, clinical medicine, media, homeless health, social and criminal justice, and public speaking. She currently serves as Medical Director of COVID Isolation and Quarantine Sites at Housing Works in New York City.

As the former Chief of Addiction Medicine for New York City jails including Rikers Island, Dr. Roy oversaw substance use treatment and recovery efforts at the nation’s 2nd-largest jail complex. Previously, she was a primary care doctor to Boston’s vulnerable homeless population among whom the leading cause of death was drug overdose. She was also an attending physician at Massachusetts General Hospital and faculty at Harvard Medical School where she taught Clinical Nutrition and The Healer’s Art. Dr. Roy completed her medical and master’s in public health degrees at Tulane University in New Orleans, followed by residency training in internal medicine at Duke University Medical Center. Dr. Roy is a strong advocate for public service. In addition to caring for incarcerated and homeless men and women, she has served the underserved in Nicaragua and India, as well as New Orleans residents affected by Hurricane Katrina. Dr. Roy has also provided medical relief to earthquake victims in Haiti, and volunteered in the medical tent at the Boston Marathon.

Dr. Roy is a dynamic public speaker and medical commentator whose mission is to educate and empower the public to make healthy decisions. A Forbes contributor and ‘media doctor,’ her television appearances include MSNBC, NBC News, Dr. Oz, The Tamron Hall Show, CNN, Charlie Rose and CBS New York. Her articles have also been published in STAT and The Huffington Post; and she has been featured in The New York Times, Boston Globe, Wall Street Journal, Cooking Light and Oprah.com. Peri-Operative Medicine Updates

Dr. Linda Russell was born in West Islip, NY, and raised on Long Island. She received her Bachelors of Science degree, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1985, from Tufts University. She received her MD degree, graduating Alpha Omega Alpha in 1989, from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, MA. Her one-year internship and her two-year residency in internal medicine were both completed at New York Hospital (1989-92). She then went to Hospital for Special Surgery for her Fellowship in Rheumatology (1992-95). Following her fellowship she joined HSS as an attending physician, where she has continued to practice medicine.

Dr. Russell has had a long-standing interest in metabolic bone disease and osteoporosis. She served as the Director of the Osteoporosis and Metabolic Bone Health Center from 2006 to 2024. In addition to the evaluation and care of patients with metabolic bone disease, she has focused her attention on perioperative bone health. Currently, Dr. Russell is the Co-Primary Investigator for an American College of Rheumatology guideline for the treatment of Glucocorticoid-induced Osteoporosis.

In 2011, Dr. Russell was named the Director of Perioperative Medicine at HSS. Perioperative medicine is a field of medicine that focuses on optimizing the health of patients who plan to undergo surgery and on providing medical care for those patients following surgery. As the Director of Perioperative Medicine, Dr. Russell leads a team of nine full-time internists and 11 hospitalists who deliver perioperative medical care to patients undergoing surgical procedures at HSS. She also coordinates with a group of seven rheumatologists who provide additional perioperative consultation. These perioperative physicians are well acquainted with their patients’ needs before, during and after surgery, thus providing the exceptional care that HSS is known for. She also is working with a team of physicians to create a manuscript for the Society for Perioperative Assessment and Quality Improvement (SPAQI) that outlines the perioperative management of patients with Rheumatologic and HIV diseases.

Dr. Russell was recognized in 2020 by the United Hospital Fund during their Tribute to Excellence in Health Care Awards Ceremony for her passionate advocacy to promote osteoporosis and metabolic bone health as well as leading efforts to develop preoperative weight loss, diabetes management, and smoking cessation programs at HSS. Dr. Russell received 'The Wholeness of Life Award' from the Healthcare Chaplaincy in 2005. She holds the Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz Chair in Perioperative Medicine.
