Dear NYACP members,
Well, July has been HOT. Unfortunately, the Mets have cooled down significantly as we enter the All-Star break (although they did take 2 out of 3 from the Yankees!). The Wimbledon Finals have come and gone. Congratulations to Iga Swiatek and Jannik Sinner. Alas, an American Champion was not to be this year. On another competitive front, Joey Chestnut and Miki Sudo continue their dominance at the 4th of July Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Championship. On the Western end of the State, Buffalo is celebrating the 50th Anniversary Season of Shakespeare in Delaware Park. An excellent production of “Twelfth Night” has just concluded, and we look forward to a production of “Richard III”.
Of course, July 1st was the start of the new academic year at the many teaching hospitals in New York. Many of you are busy supervising, teaching, and mentoring the new interns. This is also a great time to introduce the benefits of ACP membership to our residents and fellows. For the program directors and core faculty out there, remember that ACP offers a very nice discount to programs who enroll their residents through the Residency Program Portal.
There is also a significant discount on MKSAP for programs that purchase 10 or more subscriptions in a single order. Check it out! Don’t forget to encourage your non-member faculty to join ACP as well.
What’s going on at NYACP? We are getting excited for the NYACP Annual Scientific Meeting, which is coming up on Saturday, October 11th in Albany. Although October feels far away in the heat of the summer, the meeting is less than 3 months from now. We have an outstanding educational agenda planned, as well as the Resident and Medical Student Poster Competition, and the always fun Doctors Dilemma Competition. There is more information about the Scientific Meeting elsewhere in this newsletter, and also available online at www.nyacp.org/nyacp2025, where you can register. We would love to see you in-person in Albany!
What’s going on at ACP? There has been a lot happening in the advocacy arena. ACP continues to be a strong voice for our patients and for evidence-based medicine. ACP has partnered with several other Medical Professional Societies to oppose changes to the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) and the USPSTF. We also stand in support of continued funding for biomedical research. Recently, ACP issued statements expressing concern about how recent Supreme Court rulings could have significant negative consequences for patient care and for health equity. Work is ongoing to develop clear and trusted guidelines that we have come to expect, and that our patients deserve.
Meet your NYACP Staff! This month’s staff spotlight is on Izaiah Wright, who is the NYACP District Liaison and Meetings Specialist. Izaiah has proudly been with the Chapter for over two and a half years. Originally from Poughkeepsie, NY and raised in Brooklyn, he earned his B.S. in Health Science from Lincoln University—the first degree-granting HBCU.
Izaiah reports that one of the most rewarding aspects of his role at NYACP is working closely with both medical students at the start of their journeys and seasoned physicians well into their careers. He states that “it’s a privilege to contribute to the professional growth of physicians at all stages—it’s a unique space to be in.”
Family remains a central part of Izaiah’s life, and he feels fortunate to have many loved ones here in NYC. He especially enjoys spending time with his mother, who shares his passion for sports—they regularly attend New York Giants and Liberty games together.
Outside of his work at NYACP, Izaiah is a professional sports photographer and photojournalist, and runs a media company. One of his ultimate goals is to earn credentials to photograph the Super Bowl, Olympics, and World Cup.
Dad joke of the month! (Courtesy of Todd, from a recent trip to St. John’s, Newfoundland):
Why don’t clams give to charity?
Because they’re shellfish!
That’s the news for this month. We continue to wish everyone a healthy and relaxing summer. Please always feel free to contact us for any reason at all – we are here to serve our members. All our best!
John and Todd
